Covestro’s Makrofol® ID Superlaser film for identity cards has been awarded the Blue Shield Innovation Award in the field of security identification. The award was given at the 10th Security Document Summit for outstanding anti-counterfeiting measures in Beijing by the Chinese International Association for Promotion of Science and Technology (CIAPST). In addition to that, Lily Shui from Covestro´s Specialty Films business in China received the “10th Anniversary Tribute Award” at the Security Document Summit for special contributions to the Security Document Industry.

The Blue Shield Innovation Award was the second win in a row for Covestro, former Bayer MaterialScience. In 2014 the polymer company received an award for contributing to the fight against counterfeiting as a “foreign-investment enterprise with significant presence in the chinese market”. “We are very honored to be awarded again”, says Lily Shui. “This is a great recognition for our strategy regarding safe and counterfeit-proof products here in China. It motivates us to push the innovation boundaries even further next time.”

Thanks to Makrofol® ID Superlaser film, passports can now be laser-engraved with the holder’s data and photo in higher contrast than is possible with standard laser-reactive overlay films. The high laser light absorption of the film ensures that other security features of the card, such as colors visible under UV light or holograms, are subjected to less thermal stress during the laser engraving process. Furthermore, there is hardly any degassing or blistering while the documents are being personalized, which minimizes rejects. This fact is an advantage for the thin passports that are currently in vogue, because they can be personalized more securely, faster and therefore more cost-efficiently.
